Ken Freund

I’ve always been crazy about anything with an engine.

After years of pestering my father, he finally let me drive a car - at nine years of age. At 14 I taught myself to drive stick shifts and then how to ride motorcycles. Later, I also learned to fly and have had my pilot’s license for 22 years. Working on, riding, driving, restoring, photographing and writing about all these wonderful machines has always been my passion. I've been an auto vo-tech and smog test instructor, certified master technician, vehicle inspector, shop foreman, service manager, service director, and shop owner. Over the years I’ve owned about 35 bikes and 50 cars and trucks, a lot of which I wish I had never sold!

2009 Dodge Ram
By Ken Freund | Published  06/14/2007

Back in 1994 Dodge added its distinctive macho styling to the front of Ram pickups. Since then, every competitive full-size truck has upped the ante, with bigger, more aggressive grilles and front ends. Some of them, like the newest Ford Super Duty models, look like they’d eat you if you just walked in front.

Now, spy photographers have caught a prototype 2009 Dodge Ram pickup model undergoing testing. It looks like Dodge designers may have blended in some front-end styling cues from the Charger model, including a reverse-canted grille. The 2009 model’s headlamps are still down low so the basic overall Ram shape will likely remain, but not much else is assured. The restyled Ram should arrive in 2008. I’d also like to see a Dakota pickup with compact, economical four-cylinder and V-6 turbodiesel engines for folks who are concerned with fuel economy but don’t need a large, full size pickup.

Do you like the aggressive front-ends? What changes, mechanical and styling-wise, would you like to see?

Note:  we do not have any of the spy photos that are popping up on the internet.  We did find, however, a website that does, Edmunds Inside Line.  Click here to sneak a peak.

I don't think anyone sets out with the intention of buying a butt-ugly truck, so styling is certainly important, BUT if you are serious about working a truck then function comes first. Exploit the advantage of the Cummins, address the concerns of current owners, and earnestly improve the breed. That is the formula for success, IMHO. One thing that I would like to see is a complete gauge package, even if I have to pay for it. They offer so many options that mean little to nothing to the working man, yet don't offer the means to monitor the vehicle.

I agree with the previous post. No one sets out to have the worst looking truck in town! I think the current body style has a distinctive look. A look back will tell you that Dodge set the mark back with the '94 models for the dropped fender big truck. Now why not start a new trend. As for the interior improvements, I believe accurate and complete factory gauges should be offered. We shouldn't have to pay $40K for a truck then have to start drilling and cutting to have a boost, egt, or tranny tempurature gauge.
    Is the factory listening?

I agree with the previous two posts. I currently own a '99 Ram Cummins and I wish that it had a turbo gauge and a transmission temp. gauge. I will be in the market for a new one very soon, and I believe that when you are going to spend around 40k for a new pick up truck these kind of gauges should be standard equipment. After all, they do make the highest profit margins on the Ram models.

I do not like the new look. I was disappointed with the short run of the 02-05 (1500) 03-05 (2500-3500) model. It looks too import.

Will we finally get a real crew cab and an eight foot bed? I have written several letters, asked Dr. Z several times and placed phone calls. I keep holding off selling my '97, squeezing my co-workers in the back seat of my truck. Meanwhile, no-one at work minds riding in the back of the Ford crew-cab company truck.
