Yet another EGR question

My latest confusion is: Is the stock EGR on my '96 compatible with aftermarket power (Plate) kits that plainly say not to use with EGRs? I did some searches on this subject, and it has been suggested that this is legal boilerplate the aftermarketers must use to keep the feds happy, but I'd like something more concrete before I trash the system OR install a kit WITH the EGR functioning. I'd like to keep it, because it has never given any problems, but then again, I've been a good boy for 9 years..
