Interesting Problem with fuel guage

I have a problem with my factory fuel guage. When I have driven approximately 410 miles the fuel guage will read quarter of a tank of diesel left. I park the truck for the night and the next morning I get in, start her up and the fuel guage will nosedive to empty. I fill her up and I only put in 26 gallons. I know I have a 35 gallon tank. So do you think the sending unit is going bad or is this just the way dodge made the unit work? Bothers me sometimes so I tend to keep a close eye on the mileage not the fuel guage.
