241DHD transfer case replacement

First, what is the difference between the NV241DHD and the NP241DHD? Are they interchangable? Looks like the current market sells the NP model exclusively. Checked with transfercase.com and they say NP is for New Process, not sure what that means for me.

Second, as you may have guessed, I just cratered my transfer case. Leaked all the oil out and bang, done. I have a '96 automatic, 47RE (recently overhauled). Looks like the transfer case just unbolts from the tranny (once the drivelines are removed), and slides off. Any reason to worry about damage to the transmission or its output shaft? Tranny never overheated (I have Isspro temp gauge), full fluid, oversized pan, extra clean fluid, etc.

Cost aside, I'd love to hear it is only a matter of changing the transfer case, comments?.......
