strange noise

I have a 1998 12v auto quad cab 4x4. When the truck is cold I have a strange noise (almost sounds like a bad belt but not screechy just rhythmic in nature) from the engine compartment when accelerating. If I let up on the go pedal the sound stops and then it starts again when I press the pedal down again. After I drive about 2 to 3 miles the noise stops and the truck runs quietly. Also have experienced increased lag time with the speed control form the time I set it until the time it will maintain the set speed. Wonder if the two are related. thanks for any ideas....
