How much play in the starter shaft?

I pulled my starter today to make replacing the lift pump easier. The gear shaft has almost 1/8 inch side to side play. It has been almost 300k since I had it off last and I don't remember it having much slop. It works good and makes no noise. I'm asking those of you that have done a bunch of starter changes, should I re-install it?
