egt question

Hello all I have a 98 12v with a pdr cam aftermarket intake 4" exhaust straight and a 8 plate ff arc middle and star wheel turned forward. My question is what should egts be at idle I hear people say they wait till 300deg before shut down but my truck will idle at 400-450 now matter how long it idles is this normal? I have tried other gauges and they all read the same.
