strange engine noise ???

I have had my dodge for 11 months with minimal problems,just recently i noticed a unharmonic whirring noise that is on and off more during load. Thought it might be the belt or something in the front, took belt off ran engine, noise still there ,used a stethascope and the noise seems to be coming from the middle to the back. Could this be the lift pump? This is my first diesel and first dodge also my first post. lol
