Pinging noise?

I've begun hearing a pinging/clicking noise from the outside of the cab at idle. It happens intermittently, cold, hot, and in between. At first I thought it was the new 4" exhaust pipe expanding or contracting, but now I'm starting to wonder.

Could this be the lift pump telegraphing its demise?
