96 Trany problem

I have a friend with a 96 3500 4x4. His auto trany shifts from 2nd to 3rd, stays in 3rd for only a second and then to overdrive. When pulling a load it goes from overdrive to second. When he uses the manual lock out button to put it into 3rd from overdrime it goes directly to 2nd gear. Dealer says nothing they can do. My dad has a 93 that there was a sensor that would go out and cause similer things. Can anyone help?
