trans adjustment or throttle senser

My '97 automatic has started pulling some %#%# that is about to drive NUTS! All these small towns have 45 to 50 mile per hr. speed limits on the highway . now this thing has started shifting up and down probably 5 second cycles in this speed range. I have to either drive below 40 or above 55 to prevent it. seems to be around 1500 to 2200 rpm range when it is yoyoing up and down. Am I going to have to shoot it?? I went to see about ordering a new 2003 Monday and they told me I can't even do that til . NOV. or Dec. In the mean time, does anyone have any ideas? Is there a speed sensor or throttle sensor? I hate to have to shoot it to get us both out of misery since out of all the trucks I've had in the last 26 years, I am sort of getting attatched to it.
