engine performance

My fuel guage has not been properly working for some time. I have not been concerned with it because I go by my mileage as to how much fuel I have remaining. But, I filled-up the other day and it appeared the fuel guage was temporarily working. I say all this because the engine seem to be running smoother, and I seem to have more accleration power. Is there a connection here?
