what temp.is gauge reading?

I would like to know about what temp.the engine is running if the gauge reads about the width of the needle past the 2`nd mark? Ido know that a cool running engine will have several long term problems. ex:faster cylinder wear,sludge build-up moisture in the oil. Any one ever shoot the engine with a electronic temp gun? What is the factory temp on the thermostat? 96`3500 5-sp thanx
