grabing a lower gear

I have a '95 4x4 auto. Should not have bought it but the price was right. Anyway is there a way to make the trans. grab a lower gear quicker when pulling or faster acceleration. When I'm pulling and trying to get on the freeway or just trying to maintain a 65 mph speed it will hang in third gear and bring the rpm to 2600 plus or minus. I know that in forth or fith it will do fine it is just getting the trans to let it get there. Even if I am running empty it will wrap third gear way out before letting into forth just the same as pulling, just the process takes a shorter time.I have been told use different torque converter- do not know though. Any advice?
