Problem with oil drain plug......

Hope you guys can answer a question for me. This morning I was trying to change my oil and when I retightened the drain plug the outer flanged snapped like a twig and no I wasnt tightening it excessively not much at all really I am just glad it did not happen on the road that could have been expensive. Anyways my question is- Being that today is New years no real part stores or dodge shops were open so I had to settle for auto zone and some other fast food parts house. I did not buy the truck new so I dont know if my drain plug is the original but the one that they sold me both places was I am guessing about 5/8" maybe 11/16 that is bolt size not head size and yes it is metric but I am not good at converting the one that was in it is about pretty close to 7/8" definetly bigger than 3/4" and it does have a 3/8 drive on the top of it now my question is did someone put in an oversized plug or am I just getting the wrong part for some reason I just found it odd that I got the wrong part from two different places. Any ideas or help will be aprreciated also my truck is a 94 if it makes a difference.
