Cruising rpm's

Is there a certain rpm that is the limit for cruising? I want to be able to cruise at 80 mph but that is puting my rpm's at around 2700-2800. Is that too high? my truck redlines at 3000 but I hear people saying they shift way above that. I just don't want to damage anything.
