5spd tranny grenaded??

I wasnt in the truck i am about 150 miles away from it but the guy driving it said that he was going down the interstate with the cruise control set at 65, he heard a loud pop and it was like the truck slid out of gear then the engine died. HE shoved the clutch in and restarted and let out of the clutch now when he lets out of the clutch you can hear a low sounding grinding noise ( he described it as the noise a cordless drill makes when it is almost dead). The truck will only move a little in 4th gear (high range) just grind in all other gears including reverse. I instruccted him to try low range too and no go thier either. Any ideas what is wrong with it? Clutch, input shaft, the whole thing. Thanks for the ideas and info. DOes anyone have procedure list of how to remove the tranny in one of these (this will be my first) with any tips, tricks, special little tools to have on hand. Thanks alot Travis

P.S. we need to do this on the cheap side he has only had the truck about a month and hasnt even paid the taxes on it yet, he was on his way back from picking up the title tonight.
