Transmission noise in reverse?

I noticed something with my 1995 2wd 2500 Auto that I have had for a week now. When I put it into reverse there is a humming sound that comes from the drive train. This occurs before I start moving. I have also noticed that it has a tendency to stall when I am backing up. The rig has 211,000 Miles on it. Does anybody have a clue as to whether this is normal?
