The check valve should be in the rubber line fitting that goes between the heat exchanger and the steel line to the trans. You do not HAVE to remove the check valve. You can run with it and never have a problem. After all, thousands (all) of Dodges come from the factory with it installed. Removal of the check valve is to prevent a problem in the very rare instance that it should get stuck.
