Cleaning Engine Compartment

I have oil leaking from all of my valve cover gaskets, as well as from lower down on the engine, so I need to clean my engine compartment before I start working on things. What is the best cleaning method you all have found?

Can I just go to the carwash and spray hot soapy water in there, or will the high pressure water cause problems with seals, wires, etc? I have a '98 12-valve, so there shouldn't be too much electrical stuff to worry about, is there?

I tried some of that foaming engine cleaner once, but it didn't seem to do a whole lot of good.

Thanks,
