1st Gen Exhaust upgrade

Can anyone tell me the biggest diameter exhaust one can put on a 92 Cummins? I wanted to go 4" but have heard that is too much need to go with 3 1/2". Any pricing figures? The old one is rotting off from the muffler back. I would like to replace with mandrel bent from the turbo back and get rid of the muffler.
