questions on governor, tach, max rpm, dyno

So I was sitting on a dyno the other day strapped down and ready to go.........

however.... since I had never been on a dyno I didn't ask the proper questions about what I needed. And since he had never dyno'd a diesel he had some assumptions. This is what I now call the "newbie vs. newbie" scenario.

OK so he needs me to hit 3k rpm. I had no tach. Also didn't know how much I weighed in at.

OK I have tach Autometer 2888. Not the one I wanted but the one I could get the next day so I can dyno this Wednesday. Now that looks improbable.

So here we go. Can the 2888 be used on a 1992, is there that connector under the dash? Or am I better off using the alternator probe and getting it calibrated by a diesel tech somewhere? That seems to be the professional call, but does anybody know of somebody w/in an hour or so of NYC.

from what I have read we max out around 2450 with the governor...yes or no?

We need a "dyno'ing for dummies" FAQ or forum
