3.07's in a Getrag 4x4 truck?? Who's done it and what do you think?

I ran across a local truck that's a 3 sp auto 3.07 4x4. I was always curious as to how this would be w/ a 5 sp. Would it make 5th useless, could you cruise on the highway or would you be downshifting all the time? They would be going in a stock turbo/injector truck w/ the pump turned up and a governor spring, and either stock or 265-75-16 tires. Is it even worth the effort? I'm going to be switching diffs anyway, and wondering how much better 3.07's are than 3.54's mileage wise. Thanks
