Cool Turbo Fixed

Don't know if anyone saw my post on the PW injector thread about my turbo noise but it is now fixed!!!! Problem was the thrust collar on the compressor side. It fits over the turbo shaft, and has a washer machined onto it. Imagine a piece of pipe fitting snuggly over another with a wide base (washer) on the end. The washer had broken and lost approx. 65-75% of its surface area allowing the shaft to move. The impellars (sp) were not getting into anything but a backing plate under the exhaust side was moving and rubbing on the turbo shaft where it enlarges and starts to form the veins on the exhaust side. If you look in a Cummins book it is part number 06 on the turbo breakdown schematic!!!!!!

Now getting this part was a whole nother ordeal. I originally called the Cummins dist. for Texas (Cummins South Plains, Arlington Tex.) and ordered a turbo rebuild kit. The Person who rebuilt it works on Cummins, Cat, and anything else they put in large boats. He said to ask for the master rebuild kit as it comes with all parts needed. Problem #1--- There are two different rebuild kits---why I'm not sure. Eventhough I specified Master kit, I got the Kit that had everything BUT the Thrust Collar!!!!!!!!! Which brings up point #2--delivery. I asked if it (the Kit) could be delivered on a Saturday. Sure no problem. I ordered on Friday morning the 8th. Finally located the kit on TUESDAY THE 12TH!!!!!! I had to locate it, Cummins didn't!!!!!!! If not for the kind souls at both FEDEX and UPS the parts would probably still be in the back of some truck in south Texas riding around!!!!!!! Problem was that Cummins said that they ship via FEDEX. WRONG!!! They shipped this package......you guessed it UPS. It also had a bad address, not sure how this happened. In all fairness to Cummins South Plains, the kit was shipped out of the main Cummins warehouse in Menphis Tenn., or so I was told.

I ended up finding a siezed marine Turbo (they have cool water cooled housings) and stole the thrust collar out of it. My shaft was still balanced and was true to .001 ( I think this is one thousandsth, but I am mathmatically challenged). The 16cm housing sure makes this beast come alive much earlier. We were going to do the injector (PW's) install but he had a prior commitment and we spent the better part of Saturday looking for a salvage turbo to rob. I will let you guys know when the injectors are in and my SOTP dyno results (Seat Of The Pants).
