Check the connection of the cable to the tranny. Mine came loose and wore the pin off that comes out of the 90° "differential" that goes from the tranny to the cable. The pin is replacable so you don't have to buy the whole speed reduction/increaser kit. This little 90° gear set calibrates your speedo to the model of your truck(rear end ratio, tires etc.) At a speedometer repair shop the pin was $1, the speed reducer was $80 plus they needed the number off of it to be sure of the ratio. Ya right after 300,000 Km?
Also, the nut on the final drive out of the tranny/xfer in the yoke could be loose. Give that a good torquing if the above is OK. I don't know if this is true on the W, but the D it can be problematic.
