Auto shifting problems

I ran into town today truck ran fine, shifted fine, no problems, parked truck for about 1 1/2 hrs, jumped back in headed down the road and the trans would not shift out of first gear unless i nailed the throtle, i'm talkin red line shift, but after that it would not shift from second to third, i stoped and checked the throtle shift cable adjustment that goes down to the trans, it looked good and had not moved, but in order to get the trans to shift had to pull the adjustment slide all the way forward about 3/4" past the recomended setting listed in the service manual, at this setting it seems to shift ok but the throtle is noticably harder to push.

Is there somthing in the trans that could have come loose or broken??

Has anyone else had this problem??
