Question no fuel

Running down I-20 between B'ham and ATL at about 72 mph, pulling an empty trailer, 1/4 tank of fuel, A/C on, felt the truck loose power, then pick back up, about 10 miles later, going up a hill and it does same thing, this time it never recovers, coast to a stop on side of road, raise the hood and "look" at it, engine just spins, afraid my fuel gauge had gone bad and I was really out of fuel, cracked bleeder on top of filter and give lift pump a couple of pulls and get a little fuel at a time, some air, close bleeder plug, stil wont start, cracked an injector line and away it went, ran another 25 miles to fuel station and another 75 miles home after fill up....is the lift pump getting week? 180,000 miles...
