Fuel gauge

My fuel gauge stopped working about a week ago. The only thing I can figure is that my switch, from the main tank to aux tank was stuck right in the middle. Its a toggle mounted on the the dash, I think it was accidently bumped and stuck in the middle. The fuel gauge gives false readings, could there have been a short, or have the fuel senders been prone to failure? Thanks for any suggestions in advance. 93 CTD 4X4 Mag-Hytec DIFF & Tran, stock.
