Alaska trip article

Having made the trip to Alaska this last April, the magazine article certainly brought back memories of the extraodinary trip. Nearly running out of fuel, looooong stretches of road, beautiful view that goes on and on. And a trip that will never be forgotten.

The writer describe the roads quite well but I would like to make this additional point. The fills on the valleys will have shifts and heaves just as mentioned. The net result of the road condition is that you can NOT go fast down hill so as to have a little boost going up the next. Over half of the up hill grades were made in low gear, petal to the metal to get the 23k gross we were pulling over the top. That is the reason for very low fuel mileage. With a total of ninety gallons fuel useable on board, I was about to have to siphon the last three gallons from our aux tank to hopefully get to the next station. We rounded a curve and there was a station.

I filled up and left about three hundred dollars American with the owner. As mentioned, get a credit card and use it for best prices and exchange on the Canadian dollar.

Loaded both ways, (I brought a John Deere tractor back) I spent around 4500 dollars on the trip. Food, fuel, lodging, trinkets and all. Everytime I think of the trip, I want to do it again. It was the most memorable trip I have ever made by vehicle.
