Engine Controller

Anyone have a lead or advice on where to find an "engine controller" for a 91 Dodge 250 w/ AT 5.9 Cummins. When I pulled off the highway last night there was smoke coming out of that black box, battery had boiled dry & no doubt shorted. second question is, what would have caused all of that - runaway alternator?
