I hear you on the 5500. A 3500 is no 5500 but I will say this from experience:
Purchase a new 2010 3500 add 19.5" wheels and add one full length rear leaf spring. The increases in GCVW and brake sizes of the 2010 will give you a super truck with a decent ride.
Add an air ride hitch like one below and your truck will ride like a dream.
