oil change

I just changed the oil in my truck and had a problem come up that I am concerned with. when I drained the oil only 4 qts of oil came out of the engine. I let it sit for an hr with the drain plug out and that is all that came out. after that I added the 11 qts that the engine calls for. now I have oil 2-3 inches over the safe on the dipstick and haev oil flowing out the exhaust when I start it. does anybody have any suggestions on where 7 qts of oil would have gotten stuck in my engine and besides draining it all again is there anything I might be able to do.
