VP 44 - HO versus SO

I tried searching but . . .

I know it was covered before - can't find?

Anyway friend has 01 HO. Mentioned if VP goes out switching to SO pump.

I thought an HO needs an HO, and SO needs and SO. Recall that you can do swap as the ECM won't communicate or something?

Can anyone clear this up or place a link to the post that I can't find?
