Where can I get a 17mm allen wrench?

Howdy,

I changed the lube in my 6-speed the other day and discovered that the fill plug takes a 17mm allen wrench. Luckily I was able to use a metric bolt that I had laying around to get the plug out so I could put fluid back in the darn tranny. What wingnut decided that they needed to use such an oddball size instead of a regular old 3/8 or 1/2 square drive like the engine oil plug uses, and why is it that you never think to check for nonsense like this *before* draining all the old oil out of the transmission?

Anyway, I'd like to have the correct tool for this but none of the auto parts stores around me have the right size allen wrench. Does anyone know where to find something like this?

Thanks,
Mike

You can get the 17mm allen wrench at most hardware stores or Sears.

If you don't want to go to NAPPA try this http://www.autopartsgiant.com/tools/ Don't know anything about them.I would think your auto parts store would have them-Pep Boys,Auto Zone,O'Reilly.

Just weld a handle on your 17 mm bolt.

Sears

You can buy one at Sears if you don't mind Craftsman

17mm bolt and a pair of Vise-grips. It will fit places a real allen wrench won't.:)

Tool King

If you have a Tool King or the like go there, you can get a kit (8,10,12,14,17,19mm) for $17.00. The 10mm will fit the transfer case plugs where applicable.

I vote for Boldt's Wagon's idea. Also, if it's a pipe thread, you can put a real plug in it's place instead of buying an otherwise useless tool.

Thanks for the help!

I'll pull it out this weekend and see if I can find a "normal" replacement for it. Otherwise I"ll go see the folks at NAPA down the street again and make them look harder this time.

Thanks again,
Mike

I read somewhere that you could buy the fill plug for a NV3500 tranmission that will fit our NV5600's. It has a built in magnet.

I don't remember what Dodge truck came with this.

I got mine at NAPA. It was marked as being for a Volkswagen Bug for something or other......

Now that I have Fastcoolers on my tranny, I won't likely ever need to mess with that plug again :D

you can always take a bolt with a 17mm head, about 1.5" long, then run 2 nuts onto it, and tighten the 2 nuts onto each other.

Then use the 17mm head for the allen plug, and use a 17mm wrench on the inside nut, so as you remove the plug it tried to tighten up the inside nut onto the outside nut. Works every time!

VW Service Tool!

I used the allen wrench I had for my VW's. Same SIZE! The last time I had a working Beetle was 1988.
