Need help with brakes

my brakes are not working in reverse. The brake light and abs light come on when I hit the brakes while backing up. Also the brakes will go completely away. The peddle gets hard and the brakes fail. Once I go a few feet forward they come back. I have not found an obvious vacum leek. I have bled the brakes a few time and they look visiouly fine. I am at a lose, any ideas would be appreceated. I dont care how far fetched they are.
