bleeding brakes, cant purge air

I decide to change my brake fluid today as my old fluid was getting pretty rotten. Drained th reservoir, put the new fluid in and started bleeding, starting at the back and working up front. Just working by myself, so I had to constantly push the brake pedal in and check for air. Still purging air out of the back lines, went through about 50 oz. of brake fluid trying to get the air out. Does this sound right? brakes still dont work. getting annoying, wish i had taken it to the garage and had them take care of it, now i feel like rolling the truck off a freekin cliff......
