Loose Steering Wheel

A while back, I noticed that the steering wheel in my '98 4x2 12v (5-speed man.) was binding against the plastic column cover. It wasn't hard to steer, just "sticky" when making small inputs while driving down the road. Turned out the wheel is loose - it wiggles up and down (or side-to-side) at least 1/4". Following manual instructions, I removed the airbag to see if the nut was loose, but in fact, it was tight, and the shaft wiggles with the wheel. It's hard to imagine that I could have a bad bushing with only 86K miles, but I can't think of anything else. Any other ideas?
