are lumpy sidewalls common to truck tires?

The Goodyear tires on my 01 Ram all have ripples in the sidewalls, some deeper than others. My 98 which also had goodyears showed the same thing. While waiting for a ride at the dealer the other day I noticed that the new trucks on the lot with Michelins did not seem to have these bumpy sidewalls. Is this something that is more common to higher ply tires or should I have it checked out?
