Silencer Ring Purpose

What's the purpose of the silencer ring anyway? Will removing it not do ANYTHING to the "integrity" of the beast besides something good for it? Surely it's there for a reason. Just trying to justify removing it when my baby gets here.
Also - anybody got input on those rhino floor liners - I had some of "the best" (not rhinos) in may last truck, and they crapped out on me after about 2 years.
