Steering Box Play

My 98 has play in the steering box. If you center the steering wheel you can turn it about 2 inches left or right from center before it starts to turn. I know there is an adjustment on the box, Is this too much slack to adjust out? If it can be adjusted is there any problems with binding or any thing else? Has anybody rebuilt their steering boxes? If so how much trouble was it.? If all else fails is there a good source for rebuilt or new boxes.
