I have code p0700

Ok guys, I did a search on this code and it sounds like a transmission related problem.
One thread the guy said he was a messin' with the dash lights, then threw the same code. I too just installed a combo gauge and had the dimmer/light switch out to get at the wires for the gauge lights. While I had the switch out, for about 5 minutes, the dinger went off, and then stopped, then went on again, and then off, course by that time I had it all hooked up anyway!
One other post talked about replacing the TCM , and a wire harness.
Both of these posts were fairly old, so I am wondering if there has been any new information since then?
This is a dealer diagnostic item I assume, and want all the info you guys can share, before I make the attempt at getting it corrected.
