Change tire and rim size?

I need higher load capacity tires than my stock 265/17 Michelin LTX AS. Can I change out my rims and tires and go to a 265 or 285 16 without screwing everything up. I'm thinking if I keep the approximate same diameter as stock I should be OK. Of course I'm not a math genius so I'm guessing.

The tire selection and load capacity for the 16's is much better than 17's. I would like to get up around 3750 # per tire. I have looked at the Toyo but they are very $$ in 17's

Any info or help would be appreciated.
