New 3rd gen or keep 2001
I swore after all the steering fixes I put on my new 2001 I would not buy another dodge. After towing my trailer with the 6.0 gas chevy my dad has I would really miss the power of a diesel and exhaust brake. The steering on the chevy is excellent. The issues driving me to look at a 2006 dodge are, price is great around $30k, I want an auto, so someone else can drive. I know the brakes are better, etc., as I have rear drums but I have an E brake so braking is not a concern. Added benefits would be quieter, new warranty, and the most important thing, better steering?
What I need to know is how they really drive compared to the 2nd gen with steering fixes. Mine is better than new but still too much play and correction required on bumpy roads. I also don't feel comfortable letting others drive it in fast heavy traffic. Drives good on smooth roads. I don't see how the steering can be so much better with the same front end design but most people say it is much better. I will test drive of course but that usually isn't enough to tell especially as the vehicle ages. I know the ball joints, u-joints, still have issues which is a shame but I can live with that.
May be willing to give dodge another chance as cummins has my vote.
