Factory Oil Pressure Gauge

I've seen many people refer to the factory gauge as an "idiot light". I remember reading a post that said it only showed 3 or 4 computer programmed pressure readings instead of showing the true pressure in analog fashion.

Watching my guage while driving, I could see it move with engine speed to different values, but seemingly always stopping at the same places.

Last night, with the engine fully warmed up, I decided to play a bit. I find that I if I increase engine RPM just a bit, the gauge moves just a bit and holds. It does not "jump" to a next-higher programmed value. I can do this using my right foot, or the cruise control activated manual idle feature.

What I'm saying is that my gauge is working as I would expect and NOT like an "idiot light".

Has anyone else played with it, or did we all take the conventional wisdom as gospel?
