2003 6 speed transmission

My gear shift is loose near the transmission. Apparently, it screws into the transmission top cover. Anyway my problem is I can feel a notch cut into the shift lever that a wrench fits on but, my problem is how do you get the rubber cover lose to raise it up so I can put a wrench on the shift lever and tighten the little bugger.
