Trans Fluid Level Question

Hello all, Since I've been considering BOMBing the truck, I've been paying a whole lot more attention to its' mechanicals, since any future problems might very well be on me not Dodge if I do, so I'm checking the fluids and I loosen the plug on the driver's side of the tranny and the fluid starts pouring out, am I crazy, or shouldn't it be 1/4 inch below the hole?
Also, checked the diffs', and is the factory synthetic stuff STINKY? I mean bad stanky like a mean fart times 10 pardon my french.
