e-brake sound

I drove a 03 today with an exhaust brake while I was getting my truck serviced at the dealer. I had never been around one to tell how good they work. I must say I think that is a good investment to have. The only thing I didn't like is that it sounded like an air leak while it was activated. All you could hear was air. Is it supposed to sound like this? My personal truck is straight piped, and I was wondering if it would sound more like a big rig when the brake activates or would it be more of an air leaking sound.
