valve adjustment

how many of you out there have adjusted your valves any sooner than the recommended interval. I talked to my dealer today and he said not due until 100,000 miles and it would be out of my pocket expense. my was running yesterday and it sounded a lot louder that it use to and i thought about the valves needing adjustment. any opinions from you folks out there..
