Tranny concerns ??
I'll try to make as short as possible.
My stock 48re with 107k was starting to go in and out of overdrive then got to where I could not even get it to lock up or go in to overdrive. I talked to DTT, Suncoast and Georand. All about the same price DTT on the high end.
So I limped it in to a local diesel shop for an opinion. They could not get there scanner to work on my tranny so they had to pull the pan and check electrical manually. After their price on stock rebuild was close to Goerand and Suncoast I told them to just throw a new filter and fluid in it and I would limp it back home to think it over. Much to my amazement it was very peppy out of the parking lot. I could not tell if I was just imagining this or since for a week now I have been driving around our old shop '95 Cummins with 400k on her, it felt so different. Once i got it on the freeway it shifted beautiful. One last test, the turn before my house, I don't know why but I floored it turning left and the truck went sideways boiling the tires on pavement, has never done that before.
I called the tranny shop and asked the shop foreman what he found in the pan and/or filter. He was short but said that it was full of band material. I do not like to distrust people but does this sound right? I changed the fluid and filter about 30k ago and all was clean, not that it could't change though.
What do you guys think? It was starting to slip a little when heavy throttle in overdrive. Do you think that I could buy a good torque converter and be all good, or would whatever problem might be in the tranny tear up a $1000 T.C. 5k more miles down the road? Sorry for being so long winded but all the advice I can get is appreciated.
