t-case is gone

I think the t-case in my dad's 03 6sp is gone. he said he tried to use 4wd this afternoon and made a horrible grinding noise and it would barely turn the front tires at idle and wouldnt do anything at wot. has anyone been into these and are they fairly simple to work on?
